In Language Arts, we will do activities, which require proofreading various sentences to find grammatical errors as well as identify the different parts of speech.  We will also work on a variety of lessons to help your child develop skills to apply throughout the writing process.

Our focus in language arts will be:

  • sentence structure

  • parts of speech (nouns, verbs, and adjectives)

  • expressive, imaginative and informative writing

  • formal and informal speaking

  • listening skills

  • handwriting - D'Nealian

  • the writing process (Prewriting, drafting, revising, editing, and publishing ~ The 6+1 Traits of Writing)

Your child will use the Sitton spelling program provided by the district beginning in November/December.  Practice at home is essential to your child’s success.

Here is a list of the priority words your child should have mastered by the end of first grade:

the of in his
he a as that
and on is they
